What is FIR?
- The definition of FIR is not given in the Criminal Procedure Code 1973. But the provisions related to this are given in Chapter 12.
- The full form of FIR is First Information Report, also known as FIR or First Information Report.
- First Information Report is registered only for cognizable offences. Cognizable offenses are those in which the police officers have the authority to arrest a person with or without a warrant and initiate an investigation without obtaining permission from the court.
- Under section 154 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a report or information is initially given to the police. And based on that information or report, the police record the occurrence of any cognizable offense in the FIR Register, which is called the First Information Report. This is the first information about the commission of a cognizable offence. That is why it is called the First Information Report.

- If someone registers a false FIR, his police can initiate legal action by registering a case against him under section 182 of IPC. Under this section, the court may punish him with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, with a fine which may extend to 1000 rupees, or with both.
When Should FIR be Registered?
- As soon as one knows about any offence, it is advisable to register an FIR. If the FIR is not registered at the primary level, the reason for the late filing of the FIR is asked, and on being satisfied, the FIR is registered.
